Singer AMY LEE Helps Give EVANESCENCE Substance

Joel Francis of The Kansas City Star reports that EVANESCENCE singer "Amy Lee is a rare person in rock music: a woman fronting a hard-rock band, and a rising musician who cares more about her songs than her album sales.

"Her band, EVANESCENCE, is an unusual rock band. In the age of homogeneous radio playlists, EVANESCENCE sounds like Sara McLachlan covering THE CURE for a Tim Burton soundtrack.

"Lee isn't afraid to rock out either, but she uses her songwriting skills to pair the band's edgiest songs with meaningful lyrics. Lee, 21, also hasn't let her status as one of the few women to succeed in the male-dominated territory of hard rock distract her from her craft.

" 'Generally I've been treated pretty respectfully,' Lee said. "You never really know how hard it is, you just have to represent what's most important, and for me it's the music.

" 'Sometimes I don't know if they're being nice because I'm a cute girl or because I'm a musician," Lee said. "Every day I just try to be the best musician and artist I can and know I am doing my best to get my music across. That's the only way I can stay true to myself.'

"That generally doesn't stop the catcalls and requests for nudity at concerts, but Lee takes that in stride, though admittedly she has people looking out for her.

" 'It can be hard at times to be taken seriously,' Lee said. "Ben (Moody, her EVANESCENCE co-founder) has done a great job of protecting me from a lot of that stuff.' " Read more.
